Developmental Editing
Welcome to my developmental editing service! I offer academic developmental editing for book proposals, book manuscripts, and journal articles. I work with scholars from within and beyond the academy at all career stages. If you are looking for someone to help get your manuscript in the best possible shape, my service is for you.
About
I hold a Ph.D. in history and have long experience as peer reviewer and book reviewer for multiple journals. I also have evaluated manuscripts for multiple workshops, and am currently a reviewer for Kirkus Reviewing Services.
Developmental Editing
I focus on the “big picture” emphasis of developmental editing rather than copy editing or line editing.
My editing services include a read-through, manuscript assessment, and editorial letter (may be in the form of an email) that offers an evaluation of your manuscript’s argument, evidence, structure, and style. In my evaluations, I give special attention to clarity and consistence of argument, and to making sure the structure of your work is coherent and building on itself. I also give attention to style consistent with the audience you as an author are trying to reach.
Testimonial
“Susan Breitzer’s intellectual curiosity makes her a perfect guide for considering your own best words about a project. She listens with uncommon attention and asks keen questions to help a writer know where she has left gaps, where she is making leaps without offering a bridge. My time with her has already been invaluable.” —A.L.
